Tasting Tips
Learn how to distinguish (and enjoy) the flavors of good wine.
1. See
Tilt your glass onto a slight angle and examine the colour. Is it dark or light, rich or dull, cloudy or clear? The colour will give clues on the varietal, age, region, and more! White wines typically gain colour as they age and red wines lose colour as they age.
2. Swirl
Gently swirl the glass to aerate or “open up” the wine’s aromas. This will allow oxygen to enter the glass and release all the aroma and flavours. Swirling wine is integral for all wines except Sparkling wines.
3. Smell
The main sense used in tasting wine. Before sipping, close your eyes and smell the delicious aromas in your glass. Try to identify the fruit, floral, herb, spice, or vegetable aromas. There are no wrong answers. Say whatever comes to mind!
4. Sip
Take a slightly larger sip, gently swish the wine around and let it coat your mouth. Still without swallowing, breathe in to let some oxygen pass over your wine. Really, let the wine saturate your tastebuds. Think about the wine’s taste and mouthfeel.
5. Savour
After you swallow, notice how long the flavour stays on your palate. Reflect on the flavour profile and mouthfeel; and remember – drinking wine is an experience. Enjoy every sip while also enjoying the company you’ve chosen to savour your wine with.
